Analytical framework
Set “in the
near future”, the film follows Frank, an older man who lives alone and is
experiencing progressive memory loss. His son brings him a domestic care robot.
Frank’s initial resistance gradually gives way to a relationship built on
cooperation, trust, and perhaps friendship.
The film
invites us to examine the use of automated systems in caregiving and raise
broader questions: Who decides what kind of care a person needs? How much
weight should be given to the autonomy of the person receiving that care? And
to what extent can technology replace family relationships—or conceal their
absence?
The film
places the robot in an uneasy position: it is neither a threat nor a solution,

1. The robot’s arrival
- Scene: Hunter, Frank’s son, tells him that
he has decided to bring a care robot into his daily life. Frank rejects its
presence, considering the decision an invasion of his privacy and a restriction
on his autonomy.

- Scene: The robot begins organizing Frank’s

improve his well-being. Frank tests the limits of its programming and discovers
a point of connection that brings them closer.

their relationship shifts from initial rejection to cooperation (00:14:07–00:24:20).

3. The transformation of the library
- Scene: Frank arrives at the library and
discovers that the space is being repurposed. The books will be digitized, and
the building will be transformed into an experience centered on immersive
technologies. Jake, who is in charge of the project, introduces Frank as a
“connection to the past.” Frank sees that modernization changes not only access
to information, but also the place of the objects, practices, and people
associated with the old library.

location: Frank
learns about the modernization project and watches the books being removed (00:18:12–00:20:21).
The tension deepens later, when Jennifer tells him that the place no longer
feels like home and explains that the new plan will center on augmented reality
and the “library experience” (00:25:22–00:26:40).

4. The conversation about memory and the robot’s existence
- Scene: Frank questions the robot about its
decisions, and the robot explains that all of its actions are subordinate to
its primary directive: protecting Frank’s health. It also admits that it lied
when it claimed to fear having its memory erased, and that it used the lie to
manipulate him. Finally, the robot draws a distinction between the human
certainty of being alive and its own knowledge that it is not.

location: When the
relationship between Frank and the robot has already developed into one of
cooperation and trust (00:41:11–00:42:09).

5. Erasing the robot’s memory
- Scene: Faced with a police investigation,
Frank must decide whether to erase the robot’s memory as the robot urges him to
do so, arguing that its primary function is to protect Frank’s well-being.
- Narrative
location: Near the
end of the film, when Frank’s deteriorating human memory is set against the
robot’s technological memory (01:13:01–01:19:10).
